These opening lines of Psalm 22 are also Jesus's final words and are confusing. Some explain them saying Christ was both human and divine. These words represent the human side of Jesus. However, "in ancient Judaism," as Dr. Brandt Pitre explains in his book, The Case for Jesus, "it was customary to invoke entire psalms just by quoting the first line." We do something similar today when we quote a well-known song or poem. In order to understand why Jesus is quoting the first line of Psalm 22 we must look at what the entire Psalm is about and this gives us an important window into how Jesus understood his crucifixion.
The first point Dr. Pitre makes is that Psalm 22 is about "trust that God will save his suffering servant despite the appearance that God has abandoned him." After it's opening lines, the Psalm declares that the fathers trusted in God and were saved. "To you they cried, and were saved: in you they trusted, and were not disappointed." (Psalm 22:5)
