Psalm 22 continued

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

You who fear the Lord, praise him!
all you sons of Jacob, glorify him,
and stand in awe of him, all you sons of Israel!
For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; and he has not hid his face from him,
but he has heard when he cried to him.
Psalm 22:2, 23-24

Continued from yesterday's post...
In his book, The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brandt Pitre makes the point that although Jesus's last words seem to be a cry of abandonment, he is quoting the beginning of Psalm 22 and one must consider the entire Psalm because it was the custom of the time to quote the first line but intend the meaning of the whole Psalm.

Reading further into the Psalm, in verses 23-24, it is obvious that Jesus sees his suffering and death as the fulfillment of Scripture. "Although he appears to be forsaken ... in the end, God will hear him and save him."

Dr. Pitre's book is available at the link above.
